Home Improvement fans have been clamoring for a reboot — but is it actually in the works?
The ‘90s sitcom starred Tim Allen, Patricia Richardson, Earl Hindman, Taran Noah Smith, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Zachery Ty Bryan, Richard Karn and Debbe Dunning. The show followed the lives of the Taylor family and its patriarch, Tim, played by Allen. Tim is the host of a cable show called Tool Time.
Home Improvement ran for eight seasons from 1991 to 1999. Since the show ended, the cast has gone their separate ways. Allen has remained a superstar as he’s starred in countless projects including The Santa Clause, Toy Story, Last Man Standing, Shifting Gears and more. Meanwhile, both Thomas and Smith have stepped out of the spotlight while Bryan has endured multiple legal issues over the years. Hindman, who played the family’s neighbor, died in December 2003.
In 2025, Allen had a mini Home Improvement reunion with Richardson, Karn and Dunning during the Shifting Gears season 2 premiere.
While there have been talks amongst former cast members about a potential reboot, nothing has been officially announced.

Tim Allen Talked About a ‘Home Improvement’ Reboot in 2023
Allen shared in a 2023 interview with The Messenger that he remained in touch with his Home Improvement costars and talked about a potential spinoff.
“I see Richard Karn a lot. And I talk to the boys,” Allen said, referring to Bryan, Thomas and Smith. “And I’m there as one of their friends. We keep talking about [a spinoff].”
The actor shared that he was inspired to move the show’s story along in a similar way to how Full House did in its revival series.
“It’s funny, one of the conversations we’ve had recently is how weird it would be if Home Improvement would be about the kids’ kids,” Allen said. “Like, if all of them had children, and I’m a grandparent. Home Re-Improvement or something like that. It’s come up.”
Patricia Richardson Is Not Interested in Doing a ‘Home Improvement’ Reboot
After Allen’s comments about a reboot made headlines, Richardson claimed that neither she nor Thomas were approached.
“It was so weird, I would hear he was coming out publicly and saying this stuff about everyone was on board to do a Home Improvement reunion, but he never asked me and he never asked Jonathan,” she said during a March 2024 episode of the “Back to the Best” podcast. “I called Jonathan one day and said, ‘Has he asked you about this?’ He went, ‘No.’ So why is he saying everyone is on board when he hasn’t talked to you or me?”
Richard shared that even if she was asked, she wouldn’t bet interested in revisiting her character. She also added that a spinoff would be hard to do without a majority of the original cast.
“I mean, Zach is now a felon. Taran hasn’t acted since he left the show; he’s not an actor anymore,” she said. “And Jonathan’s not really interested in acting. He wants to direct and write. And we don’t have Wilson.”
Tim Allen Addresses ‘Home Improvement’ Reboot ‘Challenges’
In his 2026 Us Weekly cover story, Allen admitted there was a struggle to move forward with a reboot series.
“They keep talking about how it could move forward, but they get stuck [because] there are some personality problems right now with the boys,” he exclusively told Us. “They’ve got their own issues. I always thought it would be cool if it was a story about them. That’s a little challenging right now, to put it mildly.”
